Project Overview

TinyWoolf developed a visual identity proposal for Indonesia’s 81st Independence Day in response to the national theme “Indonesia Berdaulat, Adil, dan Makmur.”

The project was initiated through a national open call organised by ADGI (Indonesian Association of Graphic Designers) in collaboration with Indonesia’s Ministry of Creative Economy and Ministry of State Secretariat. Led by Kanda Putra and developed with the TinyWoolf team, our proposal was selected as one of five national finalists from 124 submissions across Indonesia.

Titled Connected Humanity, the proposal explored how a national identity could bring different people, cultures, places, and expressions together within one recognisable system. The five shortlisted identities were later presented through a nationwide public voting process.

Challenge

Creating an identity for Indonesia means representing extraordinary diversity without reducing it to a single cultural image.

The system needed to communicate sovereignty, fairness, and collective progress while remaining clear and adaptable across government communications, public spaces, cultural programmes, digital platforms, merchandise, and community celebrations.

The challenge was to create a national symbol that felt unified without depending on uniformity.

Approach

Inspired by the second principle of Pancasila, the concept places humanity, equality, and connection at the centre of the identity.

Values drawn from Asta Cita were translated into six interconnected dimensions: nationhood, outlook, society, living environments, togetherness, and culture.

These dimensions informed a dynamic number 81. The number 8 acts as the stable structure, connecting the different expressions of Indonesia. Three lines represent the values of Sovereign, Fair, and Prosperous. The number 1 becomes a participatory space that can carry people, culture, communities, public places, creative work, and local products.

Supported by a focused red, white, and black palette, contemporary typography, image-led compositions, and motion principles, the system stays recognisable while adapting to different national contexts.

Outcome

The proposal was selected as one of five national finalists from 124 submissions and presented through Indonesia’s first public voting process for an Independence Day visual identity.

Although another proposal was ultimately selected as the official identity, the project placed TinyWoolf within a nationwide conversation about representation, participation, and the role of design in public life.

It also demonstrated the studio’s ability to translate complex national values into a structured identity system across static, digital, environmental, and motion applications.
